Acupuncture – Heal Your Body.

Acupuncture – natural way to heal and balance your body.

Like every one of you, through my 50 plus years of living on this planet, I had to deal with many physical problems. All my illnesses, instead of bringing me down, led me to the desire of wanting to know the human body and look for the best route to heal and prevent diseases. I was always grateful for my own health problems, deep inside, I always thought that the best expertise advice I would possess would be through my own experiences.

A few years ago I broke my radial bone (forearm) instead of following doctor’s orders I decided to take my healing process into my own hands. As an alternative of normal, western medicine way, 6-8 weeks in a cast plus 2-4 weeks of recovery once the cast was taken off, my broken bone was only in a soft cast for 10 days and after four weeks I was able to do massages with both my hands. That was the first time I was introduce to acupuncture in my life…. and it was like a magic for me. I fell in love with this modality to the point that after the first session I bought dozens of books, found courses and studied energy points constantly. Don’t take me wrong, acupuncture was not the only modality which I used to heal my elbow quickly, however it took big role in that process.

Why and how did it possibly work so well? Allow to understand that our body has potent points placed on the skin that are especially sensitive to bioelectrical impulses. Those points are junctures of special pathways that carry the human energy. Stimulating those points with pressure, needles, or heat triggers, they release of endorphins which are the neurochemicals that relive pain. As a result, pain is blocked and the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area is increased. This causes the muscle to relax and promotes healing.

Besides relieving pain, acupuncture can help rebalance the body by dissolving tension and stress that keep it from functioning smoothly and that inhibit the immune system. Tension tends to concentrate around acupuncture points. When a muscle is chronically tense or in a spasm, the muscle fibers contract due to the secretion of lactic acid caused by fatigue, trauma, stress, chemical imbalance, or poor circulation. For instance, when you are under a great deal of stress you may find you have difficulty breathing. Certain acupuncture points relieve chest tension and enable you to breathe deeply. Acupuncture enables the body to adapt to environmental changes and resist illness. Acupuncture points stimulated with needles allow blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated. When the blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, we have a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being.

An acupuncture point actually has two identities and ways of working. When the point is stimulated in the same area where you feel pain or tension, it’s called a local point. That same point can also relive pain in part of the body that is distance from the needle point, in which this case it is called a trigger point. This triggering mechanism works through human electrical channels called a meridian. The meridians are pathways that connect the acupuncture points to each other as well as to the internal organs. Just as blood vessels carry the blood that nourishes the body physically, the meridians are distinct channels that circulate electrical energy throughout the body. They are thought to be part of a master communication system of universal life energy, connecting the organs with all sensory, physiological, and emotional aspects of the body. That’s why acupuncture can be used to enhance many aspects of life. In addition to managing stress, you can use acupuncture to relive and prevent sports injury. Sports massage has been widely used by athletes before and after Olympic events. I had a chance to listen to the lecture on acupuncture and sports medicine at the last Olympics and it was fascinating again to hear about and see more natural ways of healing neuromuscular problems in the Olympians.

The Chinese have also used acupuncture as a beauty treatment for thousands of years. Acupuncture use potent points to improve skin condition and tone and relax the facial muscles, which can lessen the appearance of wrinkles without drugs or scalpel. Acupuncture can be used as a complementary treatment in cancer patients by helping to alleviate some of the associated pain and anxiety of the disease.

Now you have better understanding of why I fell in love with this natural way of healing. Unfortunately for me, I cannot practice acupuncture. I don’t have enough hours of study to be able to obtain a license in Connecticut, yet. That’s why I was so happy when I met a wonderful woman name Mary Colpoys. Mary graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in June 1990 and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UConn Health Center. Mary has had an interest in Acupuncture for many years and completed the Structural Acupuncture for Physicians course through Harvard Medical School few years ago. She continues to study Japanese style acupuncture in Boston and will be offering additional styles of acupuncture such as scalp, electro- and possibly laser acupuncture later this year!
