I am a dancer…that is my passion and the talent God gave to me. I was raised in Moodus, Connecticut on 33 acres of land, with plenty of rocks and trees to climb, gardens to tend, and animals to feed, water, gather milk or eggs, etc. I choreographed all of my high school plays, worked at a theater while in high school, and went to college for dance.
It also seemed natural for me to go into the Army, because I enjoyed all of the physical challenges. So I joined Army ROTC at Lehigh University, and I also continued with a dance minor at the same time. While in the Army I got the chance to jump out of planes and run obstacle courses. I also started the first Women’s Army Ten-Miler team for the 4th Infantry Division in 1999, with our first run in 2000, along with the men’s team.
Over the past 25 years or so, I have dabbled in performing and training a variety of exercises: aerobics, Cross-fit, Pilates, Tae Bo, weightlifting, and yoga. I was not certified in the past, and so could not get paid for it. But I had a lot of experience and enjoyed it so much that I was trusted by many institutions to lead group training activities, even my church in Texas, where I led a twice-weekly ladies exercise class with a Bible study for a couple of years.
I became interested in bodybuilding for competition, which was a challenge that I relished. I entered three bodybuilding competitions from 2006 through 2009; I came in second place every time. I would like to compete again and come in first place.
I have always known that I wanted to train people and encourage them to have a healthy lifestyle, so I finally decided in 2013 to invest in the course materials to study the subject and test for certification. I had already been assisting others in understanding how to use weights and how to eat nutritiously for several years, so certification was the natural next step….and earning some extra money would be a bonus! I went through what is considered to be one of the most widely recognized authority on Personal Training, the American Council on Exercise (ACE). I have been certified since August 2, 2014. Additionally, I received my certification as a Fitness Nutrition Specialist on July 21, 2016.
Last year, I was honored to lead a team of nine women in the PowerUp walking challenge that my company Booz Allen Hamilton conducted. Our team endured during this challenge to rise up from # 350 out of 731 teams to finish at #86!
Balancing work, family, and healthy living is not always easy, but I believe that being physically healthy assists one in being overall healthy and able to find that balance. And if I can assist others with finding that balance, then I am doing what comes naturally.
