Here come’s the sun, and I say…

IT’S ALRIGHT!

Summer is here! Which means nice warm weather and barbecues. But you’ve been working so hard on getting beach ready or just trying to get healthier, you don’t want to ruin it. Here are a few tips to help you stay healthy and safe during the summer months.

Food-Just because you are attending a cookout, that doesn’t mean you can’t be healthy and enjoy your favorite foods. A few simple substitutes can make all the difference. Switch out the white bun for whole summer food blogwheat, rye or sourdough. White bread spikes your insulin levels up, which controls your body’s decision to store fat or burn fat. A simple switch like that can make a difference. Also grill lean meats instead. Chicken, steak, turkey, tuna, these are all a better health choice than those burgers and dogs. And while you’re at it grill some veggies too! Eating fresh and outside will even help you soak up some vitamin D! Support your small local business’ and shop your local farm stands, the food you buy at farmers markets are more fresh and less filled with pesticides that your body will thank you later.

Physical Activity-Staying active on those hot summer days can be hard to do. But what better way to cool off than to go for a swim. Swimming is a fantastic way to cool off and an excellent form of exercise. Besides being a good form of cardio, there is higher resistance in water activities with low impact on the body. It’s a great way to lean and tone your whole body along with improving exercise-induced asthma. And how about a bike ride instead of driving to your local park, beach, or to see the fireworks? Maybe play some volleyball or soccer on the beach, if you’re not too athletic you can throw a Frisbee around or simply take a walk. Keep in mind that sand is soft so you will be treading through resistance, you’re legs will get a great workout and look leaner! You can always c4adadf364bc72103bba617a502698c9find a way to fit physical activity in your day, you just have to think a little and be creative!

Safety-It is very important to your health to make sure you’re staying hydrated. You should be drinking a minimum of half your body weight in fluid ounces of water, or a half a gallon of water a day, even more if you’re going to be outside all day in the hot sun. You can always add some lemon, lime, oranges, really any kind of fruit to spice it up a little bit. Be sure to wear eye protection, many might not like the feeling of shades on their face but your vision will thank you later. And last but certainly not least, make sure you are applying sunscreen regularly.   It prevents sunburn, reduces risk of skin cancer, and helps fight early signs of aging. Make sure you apply it every 2 hours or after swimming. Plus who really wants to  be walking around looking all leathery like last years knock off Prada bag.

Whether your going to celebrate a birthday, a graduation, or just a cookout, you can still make sure to stay with your health and fitness goals, have fun and stay safe.
